Forming of high hardness materials
Diamond and silicon carbide is often used in machining tools due to their hardness and wear resistance. There are not many options when it comes to shaping such materials. Femtosecond lasers can produce clear edges and minimal carbonization thanks to the mostly heat-free process.
Sometimes it even makes sense to structure the surface of such machining tools and it can be done with the very same laser. Other tools, like high speed turbo drills and mills used in the dental industry are too small to machine with the usual methods. That’s where ultrafast lasers can shine.
